Pleural Effusion

A pleural effusion is an abnormal amount of fluid around the lungs. Many diseases can cause it. Even if you need to drain the pleural effusion, your doctor may seek treatment for whatever reason. The pleura is a thin membrane that lines the surface of the lungs and the inside of the chest wall. In a pleural effusion, fluid collects in the space between the layers of the pleura.
