Tuberculosis (TB) is a dangerous disease that primarily affects the lungs. Bacteria are the microorganisms that cause tuberculosis. TB can spread when an infected person coughs, sneezes, or sings. This can release microscopic droplets of germs into the air. The bacteria enter the lungs when another person breathes in the droplets. TB spreads quickly in places where people congregate or live in close quarters. Individuals with HIV/AIDS and others with weaker immune systems are more likely to get tuberculosis than people with healthy immune systems. Antibiotics can be used to treat TB. Yet, certain strains of the bacteria are no longer responsive to treatment. A TB infection occurs when TB bacteria survive and grow in the lungs. A tuberculosis infection can progress through three phases. Each stage has its own set of symptoms. Primary tuberculosis infection. The initial infection is the first stage. The germs are found and captured by immune system cells. The germs may be totally destroyed by the immune system. Yet, some bacteria that have been trapped may live and reproduce.
